Bad Year 04:47
We had a good long talk Tried to put into perspective The laundry list of Everything gone wrong I know you do Try to be bright But when the tide won’t turn The stars won’t learn what’s right We go It was a little high A little low You win some, you lose some We try to make do With what we’re given to With all the minutes that passed I kept thinking things would get better The optimist mused With one eye shut But I will be Always with you For when it all goes sour In the eleventh hour anew We go It was a little high A little low You win some, you lose some We try to make do With what we’re given to And I know We’ll be alright And then we’ll go Do you remember dear The times we had In our bad year?

I was a friend of a friend of a friend You were a sister of mercy Heeding a call from the still voice within To talk to a man full of worry Outside a post room on faded cement Kindled were two sparks of spirit Struck by a chord of a video game even if We could barely hear it I don’t know why I was So behind the curve All till you came along And helped me learn Vagabond, vagrant, evicted and out Aimless and wantonly wandering In a Kadesh of decade three When even I could not recognize me Terrified to do something that would Jeopardize all that we had And so I did nothing, or nearly nothing And watched as it all went bad I don’t know why I was So behind the curve All till you came along And helped me learn I was a friend of a friend of a friend Of a friend of a friend of a friend I don’t know why I was So behind the curve All till you came along And helped me learn

"Bad Year" was written in 2018 as a semi-hypothetical account of a year of misfortune. Was it prophetic? Don't know, but it's gained a new resonance in 2020, and aims at being a message of perseverance and love. "Friend of a Friend of a Friend" is a story of incompetence-in-love and the long arc of a relationship that ended well, despite everything. For Eleonor.

Written and recorded by Elliot Shaw. Drums, additional percussion, minimality by Ian Jones. Critical gear assists by Chris "Woody" Wood and Carlos Mitil, without whose assistance these babes wouldn't have seen the light.

Mastered by Jason NeSmith at Chase Park Transduction Studios in Athens, Ga.

Photo by Ian Jones. Layout by ES. Executive production and morale maintenance by Eleonor Shaw.
